ECU marketing office is establishing a new promotion policy for the European Chess Events – “The destination Marketing” – with the aim to connect, promote, and support further the ECU Venues and Competitions.

Today we present you the next ECU events (December 2009 to April 2010) that will take place in five major and unique European Cities, among them Two European capitals, two major European Ports, and 4 of them hosted the Chess Olympiad!

Chess, History, Culture and Water connect the 5 venues. We hope to see you everywhere!

European Rapid Chess Championship – 19 – 20 December 2009

At end of the 13th century, a few kilometers north of Jazdow, a new town of Mazovian Dukes was established on a high embankment of the Vistula River. Its location corresponds to that of the Warsaw Royal Castle. Warsaw, a city with a population of nearly 2 million nowadays, is the country’s largest university and research centre. The city is also attractive in cultural and tourist terms, as  number of well-known cultural events of international importance are held here. The extensive repertoire of scores of theaters, numerous concert halls, and cinemas will satisfy even the most demanding audience. Influences of Western and Eastern Europe culture cross in Warsaw. Here historic buildings, palaces, churches and architectural complexes, destroyed during the War, have been reconstructed with great care. UNESCO appreciated Warsaw Monuments and its relics, and honoured the City by putting the Historic Centre of Warsaw on the World Heritage List. Warsaw has a well known chess history and was the host city for 1935 Chess Olympiad.

The first mention in the Historical Chronicles about the city of Moscow was made in 1147. The city was founded by the Russian prince Yury Dolgoruky Moscow and is the capital of the Russian Federation. Every year millions of tourist visit it in order to see the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Cathedral of Christ Rescuer, Danilov and Novodevichiy Convents, the Bolshoi theater and Tretyakov’s gallery. The population of Moscow is over 10  million people. Situated in the center of the European part of the Russian Federation between the rivers the Ob and the Volga,  Moscow is the Mekka of Chess and was the host city for 1956 and 1994 Chess Olympiads.

European Seniors Team Championship – 10 -18 February 2010

Founded on the site of a Slavonic fishing village as a merchants’ settlement and at the seat of the local rulers, is the capital city of the Free State of Saxony in Germany. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe, near Czech border. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. The city has experienced both great eras and times of tragedy. During the 18th century it was a magnificent centre of European politics, culture, and economic development, only to become a synonym for apocalyptic destruction just two centuries later. For the people of Dresden, and for friends all over the world, it has always been a unique city, with a fascination which has evolved throughout a turbulent history. Dresden was successful host city for 2008 Chess Olympiad.

11th European Individual Men &Women’s Chess Championship 5-19 March 2010

The city of Rijeka is the most important Croatian port and the third largest city in Croatia. Back to 19th century, due to its ideal geographical location and depth of the sea in the Kvarner Bay, Rijeka became one of the largest Central European ports and a powerful industrial center. Rijeka was also significant as one of the most important financial centers in the former Yugoslavia. The beginning of the nineties led to the collapse of industry and rapid reduction of the port traffic, so in the new millennium Rijeka turns to the development of urban tourism and service sectors. Rijeka has always been a true sports city which is confirmed by numerous successes of its athletes.

10th European Seniors’ Chess Championship & Rapid 8 -18 April 2010

Thessaloniki is 2.300 years old city, founded in 315 BC by King Cassandros and named after the sister of Alexander the Great. Thessaloniki is the center of Greek North and the country’s second largest city with 1.200.000 population. It is the leading conference city in Greece and one of the main cultural destinations in Europe, attractive to tourists with the beautiful seaside and annual average of 300 days of sunshine. The city is an excellent starting point for interesting visits & excursions in museums and ancient monuments. Thessaloniki was the host city for 1984 an 1988 Chess Olympiads.
