Award for Academic Work
The Karpov Chess Academy Rhein-Neckar for the third time has offered an award (1.000 EUR) for the best academic work (such as a thesis, dissertation or scientific paper) concerning with chess, http://www.schachakademie-hockenheim.de/news/archiv/wip2010.
In 2007 and 2009 two dozen works in such sciences as history, media sciences, computer sciences, psychology and others have been reviewed by Dr Helmut Pfleger and other scientists.
Best work in 2007 was that of Dr Roland Grabner from Austria, now working at ETH Zurich/Switzerland, named “Expertise, Intelligence, and Neural Efficiency in Tournament Chess. A Psychometric, Behavioural, and Neurophysiological Investigation”. Best work in 2009 was the work of Dr Merim Bilalic from Serbia, now working at the University of Tuebingen, on the “Einstellung effect”.

The Karpov Chess Academy Rhein-Neckar calls for bids for an AWARD for the best ”Scientific work on chess”
The prize honours for the third time a work that is under scientific issues best in the theme of “Chess”.
Applications must be prepared or published in English or German between 2007 and 2010. Works can be e.g. theses, promotions, habilitations, scientific articles in magazines or books.
Regarding the issue and the scientific orientation, there are no guidelines. The work can be empirically, theoretically, or otherwise. They can be originated from all areas of science, such as historical, psychological, educational, mathematical, medical, aesthetic or other, concerning with the theme of “Chess”.
The prize is awarded by a committee, all those scientists are playing chess: Dr Lars Balzer (Swiss Institute for Vocational Education, Zollikofen/Switzerland), Dr Markus Keller (Karpov Chess Academy Rhine-Neckar, Hockenheim), Dr Matthias Koch (Institute for Historical Studies, University Bonn), Prof. Dr Jochen Musch (Institute for Experimental Psychology, University Dusseldorf), Prof. Dr Bernd Straub (Institute for Organic Chemistry, University Heidelberg), Dr. Karin Timme (Edition Frank & Timme – publisher of scientific literature, Berlin).
The award is 1000 Euro prize money. The criteria are the scientific quality and originality of the work submitted. A splitting of the price to multiple prize winners is possible.
The work shall be handed in until 30th of November 2010 by the author or by the supervising university teacher.
The award ceremony is in May / June 2011 at the University Heidelberg, Germany. All rights of the work remain the authors’; the Karpov Chess Academy Rhein-Neckar offers help in the marketing of the work.
The submission has to include name, address and biography of the author of the work and six paper copies of the work; alternatively a CD of the electronic version (if possible in the Adobe format, pdf): If the work is a final exam work such as a thesis, the name and address of the supervisor and the institution where the work was produced, have to be given.
