671 chess players from 24 national federations took part in the 8th Amplico AIG Life International Chess Tournament – European Rapid Chess Championship, which was held from December 20th to December 21st in Warsaw, Poland.

Dresden: Gold for Georgia and Armenia

The 38th Chess Olympiad took place between 12-25 November 2008 in Dresden, Germany. Georgia won the womens’ section for the fourth time after 1992, 1994 and 1996. Armenia defended the title in the open section won two years ago.

International Coaching Course in Budapest

IM Nikola Karaklajic (1926-2008)

Belgrade Chess Union is saddened to inform the chess public that International Master Nikola Karaklajic passed away on 16th December in Belgrade, at the age of 83. He was one of the most important figures in Yugoslavian and Serbian chess. Player, writer, trainer, organizer, arbiter, journalist, chess ambassador.

New ECU Marketing Concept

n spring 2008 the ECU Board appointed Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou (Greece) ECU Marketing Director. During the ECU General Assembly in Dresden the new ECU marketing concept was presented.
